Sandra Tanzmeister
Welcome to my website!
You ...
- have a specific issue that has been causing you psychological distress for quite some time?
- are in a difficult life situation (e.g. relationship problems, separation, somatic illness, loss of a loved one, work related distress...)?
- feel exhausted and without energy?
- have anxiety, tend to ruminate or are often burdened by your worries?
- feel worthless or are dissatisfied with yourself?
What I can offer you
I am specialised in treating adults (18 or above) with anxiety disorder, depression, burnout syndrome, eating disorders and psychosomatic illness.
What does a session cost?
One session (whether online or in the practice) costs €95.00. At the moment, general health insurance does not cover any of the costs. If you have a private additional insurance, please consult them to ask if they assume the costs of psychological therapy (German: klinisch-psychologische Behandlung or psychological therapy - NOT Psychotherapie/psychotherapy).
What is the difference between psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and psychotherapists?
In Austria, three different professional groups are permitted to treat mentally ill people: Clinical psychologists, psychiatrists and psychotherapists.
I am a clinical psychologist. This means that I studied psychology for 5 years and then completed a 2-year postgraduate course in clinical psychology. In this (practical and theoretical) training, psychologists learn a wide range of interventions and concepts for the goal-oriented diagnosis and treatment of people with mental illnesses.
A psychiatrist is a medical specialist and has therefore studied medicine and later completed several years of specialist medical training. Psychiatrists are primarily concerned with prescribing medication to treat mental disorders, but in some cases (e.g. if they have additional psychotherapeutic training) they also offer talk therapy.
Psychotherapists can have a wide variety of basic professions (e.g. theology, social professions of all kinds, teachers, psychologists, doctors, etc.) but can also be career changers. The multi-year (usually between 7-8 years) psychotherapy training in Austria consists of a basic module (the psychotherapeutic propaedeutic course) and a multi-year specialist course in a specific school (e.g. behavioral therapy, systemic family therapy or psychoanalytical psychotherapy).
What is the difference between the professional groups?
Antidepressants and other psychiatric drugs may only be prescribed by psychiatrists. Clinical psychologists and psychotherapists differ primarily in their training. In addition, psychotherapists specialize in one or more psychotherapeutic methods (also called "schools"), while clinical psychologists work across schools.

How does an initial consultation usually work?
The purpose of the initial consultation is to get to know each other. This means that, on the one hand, you will tell me about your concerns and, in return, I will explain my working methods to you. The therapeutic relationship is an essential factor in psychological treatment, so it is important that you feel comfortable and in good hands with your psychologist.
The initial consultation is an important part of the treatment and is therefore billed as a regular treatment unit.
